The Advantages of Proton Therapy for Prostate Cancer

Proton therapy for prostate cancer offers a safer, more precise alternative to traditional radiation. Benefits include:

  • Increased precision using pencil beam scanning to directly target tumors.
  • Reduced radiation exposure to critical nearby organs like the bladder and rectum.
  • Fewer short- and long-term side effects, including urinary and bowel complications.
  • Effective treatment for complex or recurrent prostate cancers.
  • Potential for higher radiation doses, delivered safely, to improve tumor control.

Is Proton Therapy Right for Your Prostate Cancer?

No two cancer cases are the same. That’s why we evaluate each individual diagnosis to determine if proton therapy is the best path forward.

  • Localized prostate cancer (low, intermediate and high risk): These are among the best candidates for proton therapy, as the tumors are confined to the prostate and can be precisely targeted to preserve healthy tissue.
  • Lymph node-positive prostate cancer: When cancer spreads from the prostate to nearby lymph nodes, typically in the pelvis, it is best treated by different combination of treatments than localized prostate cancer. Current standard of care includes a combination of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) and radiation applied to both the prostate and lymph nodes.
  • Recurrent prostate cancer: If you’ve had previous radiation or are at higher risk of complications, proton therapy offers a way to retreat safely with reduced side effects.

Understanding the Proton Therapy Treatment Process

At the Maryland Proton Treatment Center, every prostate cancer treatment plan is customized to your unique diagnosis and health needs. We aim to deliver highly targeted care while supporting your comfort and well-being.

Here’s what you can expect:

Initial Consultation: During your initial consultation, you will meet with our expert team, including a radiation oncologist, to review your medical history and determine if proton therapy is right for you. Our radiation oncologists are trained to deliver radiation in a variety of modalities, which means they can discuss all radiation options to ensure you are comfortable with your care plan. If proton therapy is right for you, our billing department will help find out if your insurance covers proton therapy.

CT Simulation and Treatment Planning: We use advanced imaging to map your tumor and design a precise, personalized plan. These scans help us prepare your body position to ensure accurate proton therapy treatment.

Daily Treatment: Proton therapy begins within two weeks of the simulation. These outpatient sessions are typically 30 minutes, five days a week, with most patients returning to daily activities right after. The length of treatment depends on your specific treatment plan but generally lasts three to eight weeks.

Completion: Upon completing your last treatment, you will ring the bell at the “Ring in Hope” wall, a symbol that closes the door on this chapter of life and opens the door to a healthy future.

Follow-Up and Ongoing Monitoring: Within a month of your final treatment, you will come back for a follow-up visit to track your progress. Following that, imaging and regular check-ins help us further track your progress and make any needed adjustments.

Frequently Asked Questions About Proton Therapy for Prostate Cancer

Are you wondering if proton therapy is right for you? Here are answers to some of the most common questions we hear from patients with prostate cancer at MPTC.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men in the United States. Most cases are diagnosed after age 65. Early, targeted treatment can lead to excellent outcomes.

Your treatment course will largely depend on the stage and grade of your cancer, or how aggressive it is. Some early-stage prostate cancer can be treated with watchful waiting, or active surveillance. More advanced stage prostate cancer can be treated with a combination of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, as well as immunotherapy and ablative treatments like cryotherapy and High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound.

For all men though, treatment decisions should also be based on multiple factors, including age, overall health, cancer stage, and the likelihood that the cancer will cause symptoms or impact longevity. Personal preferences also play an important role. Some men prioritize avoiding potential side effects, such as urinary incontinence or erectile dysfunction, while others focus on pursuing the most definitive treatment.
